Home-based entrepreneur reflecting on the skills, experience, knowledge, and resources already in her house that became the foundation for BOIT.

What’s in Your House? The Journey That Led to BOIT

October 06, 2026•4 min read

Starting a business takes money.

But sometimes the first question is not, “What do I need?”

Sometimes the better question is:

“What do I already have in my house?”

That question has stayed with me because of the story in 2 Kings 4:1–7.

A widow was facing debt, loss, and a frightening future. When she went to Elisha for help, he asked a question that still speaks to me as an entrepreneur:

“What hast thou in the house?”

She had a little oil.

It did not look like much. But it was something she already possessed, and it became the starting point for what came next.

She gathered vessels. She poured. She sold. She paid the debt. And she lived on the rest.

So I Had to Ask Myself the Same Question

What is in my house?

My answer was not a jar of oil.

My oil was more than twenty years of professional bookkeeping experience.

My oil was also more than sixty-five years of entrepreneurial experience — starting businesses, serving customers, making decisions, learning from mistakes, watching numbers, dealing with cash shortages, figuring out pricing, and discovering what happens when a business owner does not know what the numbers are really saying.

That experience was already in my house.

Then the Vessels Changed

For years, much of what I knew could only travel as far as I could personally carry it — one client, one conversation, one spreadsheet, one training session at a time.

Today, technology gives us different kinds of vessels.

Digital tools — including artificial intelligence — can help organize knowledge, develop teaching materials, build systems, create learning tools, and carry human experience farther.

AI did not give me my bookkeeping experience. It did not live my entrepreneurial journey. It did not replace my judgment, faith, values, or purpose.

But it can help me pour what I already know into more vessels.

Then Came MyPriceIsRight™

One of the questions I have heard from business owners again and again is some version of this:

“How do I know whether I am charging the right price?”

That question helped lead to MyPriceIsRight™ — a financial learning tool designed to help entrepreneurs connect their selling price to their costs, contribution margin, break-even point, break-even sales dollars, and profit.

But while working through that pricing conversation, another issue kept surfacing.

Before an entrepreneur can use overhead in a pricing decision, that entrepreneur first has to identify the overhead.

That Was the Question That Led to BOIT

What does it really cost to keep your business in business?

Internet. Software. Insurance. Phone. Merchant fees. Professional services. Marketing. Licenses. Office expenses. Equipment. Shared business-use expenses.

Those costs may not arrive with a label that says “OVERHEAD.”

But they are there.

At first, I thought we needed a simple worksheet — perhaps one page, maybe two — to help a business owner identify those costs before taking the number into MyPriceIsRight™.

That little worksheet became BOIT — the Business Overhead Identification Tool.

BOIT Is Not About Turning Everybody Into a Bookkeeper

It is about helping business owners recognize the costs connected with keeping their businesses open and operating.

The business owner enters what is paid and how often it is paid.

BOIT handles the arithmetic.

NO MATH REQUIRED.

The important work is learning what belongs in the number — and what that number means.

This Is Bigger Than One Calculator

For me, this is part of teaching the language of money.

A number by itself is not enough.

We want to move from the number, to the formula, to the meaning, and then to the decision.

That is how a financial number begins becoming useful business information.

And Then Something Funny Happened

The little worksheet did not stay little.

It became a program. Then came the Read Me First guide. Then more teaching. Testing. Videos. Social-media content. And another bridge back to MyPriceIsRight™.

For a minute, I thought we had gone down a rabbit hole.

We had not.

We had discovered something else entirely.

That is the story in Blog #2.

What’s in your house? Bring it.

LET’S BUILD TOGETHER.
